Located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, the BYTOWN MUSEUM tells the tale of a burgeoning city and its inhabitants, from the early days of Bytown to today’s Ottawa.
The Museum is located at the Rideau Canal’s Ottawa locks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, between Parliament Hill and the Fairmont Château Laurier hotel — one of the most picturesque sites in the city.

Established as Canada’s capital in 1857, when it was barely more than a village, Ottawa has evolved into one of Canada’s most vibrant and exciting cities without ever losing its small-town charm.
