It is located behind the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa. The site, which covers 1.27 hectares, was last developed for Canada\u2019s centennial in 1967.<\/p>\n<p>The NCC is currently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncc-ccn.gc.ca\/projects\/nepean-point-redevelopment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">redeveloping the site<\/a>\u00a0to create a lively, 21st century park, in the heart of the Capital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"full-width\">\n<div class=\"floatLeft full-width\">\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In 1876, the site was officially named \u201cNepean Point\u201d in honour of Evan Nepean, head of the British Colonial Office.<\/p>\n<p>During the 19th century, Nepean Point served military purposes. In 1909, the Ottawa Improvement Commission, the NCC\u2019s predecessor, turned Nepean Point into a park and public space. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/services\/art-monuments\/monuments\/samuel-champlain.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statue of Samuel de Champlain<\/a>\u00a0was installed at Nepean Point in 1910, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/services\/art-monuments\/monuments\/anishinabe-scout.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anishinabe Scout<\/a>\u00a0sculpture followed in 1918.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ncc-website-2.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/1915-Aerial-2.jpg?mtime=20210408143412&amp;focal=none\" alt=\"Panoramic view of Nepean Point in 1915\" data-image=\"334474\" \/><figcaption>Panoramic view of Nepean Point in 1915<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Astrolabe Theatre, an outdoor amphitheatre which accommodated an audience of up to 700 people, was built in 1967. It remained a popular destination for events and shows until 1995.<\/p>\n<p>The construction of the National Gallery of Canada from 1983 to 1988 had a notable impact on the Nepean Point\u2019s visibility and access to it. The gallery, in coordination with the NCC, introduced public art into the landscape through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallery.ca\/visit\/tours-and-guides\/public-sculptures-and-gardens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">outdoor sculptures<\/a>, giving Nepean Point the character of an informal sculpture garden.
