{"id":11555,"date":"2018-03-22T11:24:48","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T15:24:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routechamplain.ca\/?post_type=job_listing&#038;p=11555"},"modified":"2019-10-18T10:49:00","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T14:49:00","slug":"nine-mile-portage-heritage-trail","status":"publish","type":"job_listing","link":"https:\/\/routechamplain.ca\/en\/listings\/nine-mile-portage-heritage-trail\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine Mile Portage Heritage Trail and Historic Fort Willow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13071 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/routechamplain.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Logo-friends-of-historic-fort-willow-1-300x148.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"148\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Nine Mile Portage Heritage Trail<\/h3>\n<p>A multi-use recreational trail running between Memorial Square, on Barrie&#8217;s downtown waterfront, to the Fort Willow Heritage Site (see description below) in Springwater Township.<\/p>\n<p>The trail follows as closely as possible, the original historic portage route (much of which is now on private land and closed to the public).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13160 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/routechamplain.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Nine-Mile-Portage-near-Fort-Willow-a-1-e1571409919883.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The trail is approximately 5 km long within the City of Barrie and 10 km in the Township of Springwater and follows a variety of terrain types, including sidewalks, road allowances and earthen footpaths through natural areas. Some portions include steep inclines.<\/p>\n<h3>Historic Fort Willow<\/h3>\n<p>Strategically located as a supply depot during the War of 1812, the Fort Willow area was also actively used for centuries by First Nations, the fur trade and French explorers as part of a major transportation route known as the Nine Mile Portage.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13161\" src=\"https:\/\/routechamplain.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Fort-Willow-gates-1-e1571410007339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Restorations and archaeological investigations have located and outlined the former buildings used by the soldiers. Information kiosks provide a thorough history of the area&#8217;s past use and how its location helped ensure the geographical boundaries of Canada today.<\/p>\n<p>Owing to their importance in the development of our nation, Fort Willow and the Nine Mile Portage are recognized\u200b as both provincial and national historic sites.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13162\" src=\"https:\/\/routechamplain.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Fort-Willow-June-2016-32-1-e1571410114403.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The laid-back, peaceful environment that is enjoyed by visitors today is a definite change from years gone by.
