They represent approximately 4% of the province\u2019s total population.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s Francophone community is multi-faceted and expresses itself in several ways: literature, song, education, commerce, community organizing, and government services. Francophones are making an invaluable contribution to Ontario\u2019s vitality and multicultural character.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Ontario\u2019s Champlain Scenic Route: Walking in the Footsteps of the Father of New France<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12656 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/routechamplain.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/logo-RouteChamplain-en-H-300x106.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"106\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In search of a westward passage to trade with China, many French explorers\u2014Nicollet, Radisson, Des Groseilliers and La V\u00e9rendrye (both father and son)\u2014crossed the current province of Ontario. Their forerunner, the \u201cfirst\u201d European to have crossed and described this territory, was none other than the Father of New France, Samuel de Champlain.<\/p>\n<p>In 1615\u20131616, he travelled through part of what would become Ontario, staying there for ten months. Today, a 1,200 km scenic route showcases that trailblazing journey and the 400 years of Francophone presence that ensued: Ontario\u2019s Champlain Scenic Route. To travel this route is to walk in the footsteps of the famous explorer, cartographer and diplomat, discover Franco\u2011Ontarians, enjoy outdoor adventures in unspoiled wilderness, uncover Canada\u2019s heritage and history, and taste local products.
